ABOUT THE ARTIST
Charles Williams, born 1965 in Evanston, 
Illinois, grew up in Canterbury, and went to Maidstone College of Art and the Royal Academy Schools. He has shown regularly at the RA Summer Exhibition, and in competitions like the Hunting Prizes and Discerning Eye, is a member both of the NEAC and the RWS, and has shown in group and solo shows in Britain, Europe and the USA. His latest solo show was with Thompson's Gallery in Marylebone, London. He also teaches painting to everyone from secondary school children to postgraduate students, and occasionally writes on art.

ed years, Charles Keane, E.H. Shephard, Ronald Searle, Giles, have inspired me as much as the great painters. I have seen things in them that I have also seen in the paintings that define me, like Renoir's Luncheon Of The Boating Party, Watteau's Shop Sign for Gersaint, Hopper's Gas Station, Spencer's Swan Upping At Cookham, Hogarth's Modern Midnight Conversation, or Maddox Brown's Last Of England. I think it is called 'humanism'. Not very fashionable, but I am afraid I'm not either. People are filthy, and beautiful, nasty and sublime, wicked and humane, evil and full of the most heartbreaking charity, and I want to paint it all. Sex, shopping, fear, love, television and sacrifice."
