When they invented photography nearly 170 years ago, they also invented a new medium for pornography: the erotic potential was quickly exploited and almost overnight sexually explicit images started to appear. What started as a cottage industry, 'a bit on the side' for photographic portrait studios, soon became a growth industry. Uninhibited models - the forerunners of today's porn stars - were recruited and thousands of prints were made from hundreds of negatives. Common enough as 'dirty postcards' then - but extremely rare now. Today vintage examples fetch hundreds, sometimes thousands, of pounds at auction and are viewed as a fascinating slice of social history.
